futility 101

once you’ve spent the weekend with your closest friend

lying with her on the couch in between the times

when she’s bleeding the blood that is a relief, but also a reminder

of the worst night of her life

you don’t need a digital lesson

in how to treat others

you get nothing out of being one of thirteen thousand:

checking a box by

spacing out during a talk

or playing a game in one browser

while a video plays, muted, in another.

and the person who is going to go on to do

what someone else once did to your friend:

that person is not learning a lesson

by being one of the thirteen thousand.

that person is rolling his eyes

joking with his friends

checking the box, spacing out, playing a game.
